LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

HOLA AND WELCOME!

OUR STORY

IT ALL BEGAN 70 YEARS AGO…

The American Women’s Club of Madrid was founded as a charitable, non-profit organization in March of 1954.

During Spain’s post-war years, men and women from abroad came to help with the country’s reconstruction. Small groups met for the purpose of helping women adjust
to life in a new country. In March 1954, thirty-five American women held the first meeting of the AWC Madrid in what was then, the Hilton Hotel on Paseo de la Castellana.

The membership soon outgrew the rented suite at the Hilton and a new meeting place was needed. In 1966 the present clubhouse was bought–with the generous financial help of a member – at the centrally-located Plaza de la República del Ecuador.

Over the years, our clubhouse, the veritable heart of our club, has been a meeting place for interactions among women of all nationalities, not just Americans. Having a clubhouse enables members to come in for coffee and a chat, to check out a book from the well-stocked library,
to listen to a guest speaker, to participate in an activity or to enjoy a hot lunch.

Since the beginning, the members of the AWC have served the community through activities and by raising funds to support a multitude of charitable organizations with an emphasis on those that help women and children.
